Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate.
Although I'm happy that Savage "stands by" his comment, I'm disappointed that he felt the need to apologize. Religion has unjustified position of privilege in our society. It would be no problem if Savage referred to "bullshit" in a campaign speech by Santorum, but call it a religion and suddenly debate is off limits. How, exactly, can he apologize for "name calling," when he was referring to the ideas in a text that was over 2,600 years old? Does that mean that anything disparaging we say about the Bible is automatically name calling for Christian believers? If so, it is time for the secular members of this society to cry bullshit!
