Deferred gratification

I frequently criticize religion for its emphasis on deferred gratification.  However, I don't disagree with the idea in principle.  What I find reprehensible is the notion that people can defer gratification until after they die, which, of course, is impossible.  Giving up short term pleasures now for even greater happiness later is the essence of what it means to be a reasonable adult.  Children have a very difficult time with this.  We have to be better than children.
